Tips For Pitching Stories To The Media

§ January 28th, 2012 § Filed under Marketing § Tagged , , , , , , , Comments Off

Pitching Stories to journalists must be the bit PR professionals dread the most. Writers have a reputation for being nasty, cantankerous people. But, ironically, it is typically those same PR folks who make journos behave in that way.

As a journo I tend to be pretty hectic. Press deadlines can be amongst the shortest of any sector across the globe. The very last thing I want is someone bothering me with something I don’t require. Worse, some people harass you using a report they don’t seem to know themselves. Irrespective of my own best efforts, I can’t read thoughts.

The act of pitching is comparable to bungee jumping, if you’ve completed the appropriate prep work then it’s all downhill after that and the chances are high you’ll emerge from it unaffected.

Prior to deciding to get your hands on the telephone or send away your press release make certain you’ve ticked off the following:

* Exactly why this story is great for the audience of the correspondents I’m getting in touch with. That’s all journalists care about: how will this benefit their particular audience, even if it’s only something that could keep their spirits up whilst they’re caught in a traffic jam or in an airport awaiting a jet;

* Have a clear top line for the story. What’s the one vital fact that you want to place in floodlights? **Remember** This isn’t what’s going to always be the point that makes your firm appear the most impressive…it’s got to be the detail which will interest the audience the most . (Happily both these things are normally inseparable in a strong story about a business). This phase is focused on getting that interview scheduled in (or, if possible, executed on the spot). When you’ve got over that hurdle you can say whatever you like;

* Be aware of the issue.You need to be able to answer almost any reasonable question in relation to your story…It’s your story in the end;

* When you’re seeking to set up an interview with a journalist, regardless of whether TV, radio, on the internet or print, ensure you are actually available to get it done.

In brief, getting the reporter interested is vital. You’d need to seriously, really do something dreadful, like swear at a journalist or offend them in some way to turn them off a story which they like. Once a reporter loves a story, it truly is – or really should be – just like a dog with a bone, because that is information that can be used and provided for their readership, if you like, so they won’t give up on the article.

Journalists’ careers live and die through their connections and the important information they have. If you carry out this appropriately you’re going to be a helping hand, not an impediment.

Timing is important when Publicity is involved. This means you should have a vague understanding of when the most effective time for you to pitch is.

If you’re phoning up a daily newspaper, don’t contact them at the end of the afternoon when they’re probably going to be on deadline. That makes writers irritated, as discussed earlier. Contact them in the morning, phone them early afternoon, following lunchtime. People may be a little more laid back.

If it’s the local weekly, as an example, you can be pretty sure it went to the printers a couple of days before it arrived in the shops). Thus seek to give them a call towards the beginning of their week if you can. That’s when they’re taking a look in despair at the unfilled pages and wondering what in the world they’re likely to put in.

If it’s an internet site or blog, you can most likely pitch to them at the time you like.

Also, have everything all set to go when you telephone:

* Fully understand your most crucial few points very clearly and practise presenting them to somebody else to assure clarity;

* if somebody says over the phone, right, we’d like to come down and film tomorrow, or we’d like more details, you must have that prepared. You can’t be delaying them as you put it together;

* You can actually tell journalists that your report is ‘under embargo’ until a time that best suits you – generally midnight at the start of the day you have chosen (in spite of this, they’ve nothing aside from a moral duty to stick to that).

* Timing is also key in terms of what other news Is going on. Have a look around and ask if your story is likely to be blown away by the flood of headlines already in existence.

Alternatively you could just get someone else to do the whole thing for you.

Are you a member of a trade organisation or similar? Good associations tend to behave as lobby groups and are often on the lookout for small suppliers who are able to demonstrate a certain point. If you are a recruitment manager and there is a news story about increasing joblessness, then let them know you are able to speak about that ‘from the coal face’.

Getting case studies like this is very difficult for journos and they regularly go to industry bodies to ask for help. If you’re associated with one of those organisations it pays to let that organisation know that you would be willing to say a few words on a certain issue.

Your pitch may not come off the first time, perhaps even the first few times – however wonderful and time consuming it’s been. Attempting to second guess journos is impossible. I most certainly am unable to do it. Many’s the time I have pitched stories to an editor that I believed were a dead certainty, simply to be told they weren’t interested.

Hopefully, as someone who is part of a small enterprise, you will be made from sterner stuff compared to most. Being knocked back is a common element of professional life. But you need to persevere, because using the media to your advantage can make a huge difference to your business.

A last, heartening thought. Most people – and that includes journalists – have a soft spot for people working away trying to develop their business. A journalist will be impressed you’ve put the time and effort in to help yourself and will give you a much easier time compared to what they will give a PR firm.

Reasons For Spending More Of Your Time Selling

§ January 20th, 2012 § Filed under Marketing § Tagged , , , , , , , , , , , Comments Off

An average of no more than two hours out of their day actually selling is the amount of time the majority of people in the sales force spend.

This fact is astonishing for two reasons. How do we as sales people manage to meet our goals is the first reason. Why on earth we are in sales to begin with is the second reason.

It is understandable when it comes to the lack of hours spent selling in our work week. It’s time to face it. Taking up half of your day is the paperwork alone. Not to mention the phone calls, the problem solving, putting out fires, etc.

You are likely to face many challenges throughout the day.

Do you know why this is? Any ideas why this happen?

This is actually considered as a very dangerous mind set and it is especially true if you are planning to survive in the world of retail.

Problem solving and handling customer complaints is a difficult challenge we must face on a daily basis which is why we automatically believe that this should take priority over our selling, because we see the selling as fun and rewarding.

Since all of the other issues can be stressful, we would want them out of the way so that we don’t have to worry about them.

Your goals don’t go away even though it’s true that dealing with customers and building the relationship is very important. Obtaining new customers through sales is what we should then try to do.

Time management is probably the key ingredient to spend more of your time selling.

Put together an action plan for each day of the week where you allow at least four hours of your day to be spent selling.

It is very easy to put an action plan together, but it is extremely critical that you stick to it in order to succeed.

Another key ingredient to spending more time selling is delegation. If you have the luxury of a staff, why not delegate some of the operational issues to other people.

In addition to this, you are aware of the thrill of closing the deal and the rush you get from a sale. On your work day, this can also have a psychological effect. Making a sale is a great feeling and certainly out weighs the depressed feeling that comes with dealing with operational issues all day.

Remember, you are a sales person, and it is very important to spend the majority of your time selling.

It’s true that there is no problem that your current customer is having that cannot be fixed by either you or the person you delegate it to. Therefore, concentrate on sales.

An Exploration of Coaching Establishments

§ March 10th, 2011 § Filed under Entrepreneurs § Tagged , , , , , , , Comments Off

If there’s one thing that record-breaking sportsmen, empire-building entrepreneurs, and achievers-of-life-goals are likely to concur on, it would be that somewhere along the way (if not all along the way), there was a mentor or coach that inspired, taught, and motivated them to success. Coaching companies vary, from one-on-one, to one-philosophy-to-many. You can find training based on individual goals, methods preferred, and type of experience desired. While there exists a plethora of resources, the most impactful in my opinion is the integrative coaching program type.

Some of us are fortunate to have the advice and support of a good parent or friend. Few of us might have a coach built into our lives who, specifically, helps pick out skills and capabilities within – enabling a person to perform to the best of their ability. A coaching program will typically aim to instill a sense of self-empowerment in the individual, thus diminishing dependency. These coaching program characteristics are the reason a coach is retained to help someone better their performance in one or many areas of life. Why can mentors be so effective? For the grounds that an intention is more likely to take form! This means there is a higher chance of a goal actually being reached! He stands a better possibility of challenging himself and finding a sense of balance in different areas of life. The outcome could be a sense of significance in life, and a more elated existence. And, if there’s one thing most of us seek, it is a more joyful existence.

Different training programs offer different services, with varying rates and missions. If one prefers a coaching program to (an often times pricier) one-on-one program, below is a breakdown of a few training resources.

About Executive Coaching Executive Coach training offers courses within a professional realm, while working from personal ambitions. This type of coursework is ideal in developing expertise in a professional context, such as management, people skills, and selling. There are existing programs that add executive training as an option, such as the Anthony Robbins program. This type of program is designede for executives and people that are successful, giving them added resources to implement and succeed at greater heights. Programs like these may also offer the option of holding corporate trainings for entire corporations, not just their executives.

On Personal and Life Coaching A Personal coaching program takes an overall snapshot at what a person is trying to achieve, while taking into account his or her goals and interests. A Personal Coaching program, or what is commonly referred to as “life coaching,” might use explorations, discussions, and reflection strategies to identify goals, and a plan to achieve those goals. A great model of a Life Coaching program is Landmark Education. As an organization, Landmark is prized for being very approachable and easy to comprehend, and its life coaching allows people to address a number of different life areas in which they want to grow.

A Look at Integrative-Style and Training For those who want to go a little deeper through personal and/or executive goals to add a perspective of ethics, a great program would be an integrative coaching program. An integrative coaching program may explore personal coaching and executive training, but recognizes that at a fundamental level an individual impacts, and is impacted by, the people, places, and things around him. The experience often referred to in this type of program is like a micro view of the psychology, emotions, and ethics of a person, while keeping a macro view on where the person is and wants to be in the universe, while tracking progress through a measurable, consistent methodology! An excellent example of such a program is Keith Raniere’s Executive Success Programs, which offers tools to realizing life goals, with ethics and humanitarian goals in mind.

Building Formulas With The AutoSum Tool

§ February 2nd, 2011 § Filed under Software § Tagged , , , , , , , , , , , , Comments Off

Excel’s AutoSum tool is used to automatically generate formulas. It is found in two locations on the ribbon: firstly in the Editing section of the Home Tab; and, secondly in the Function Library section of the Formulas Tab.

The AutoSum tool is fairly versatile. You can use it to generate the SUM (total) of a series of numbers. To do this, select a row of cells and click on the AutoSum tool. Excel creates a SUM formula returning the total of the highlighted cells in the first available empty cell to the right of the selected range. You can then copy the formula using the Autofill handle. As you drag the AutoFill handle down, Excel copies the formula making the necessary changes to always return the correct total for each row.

The AutoSum tool can also be used to calculate the total of several columns simultaneously. To do this, select all the data in all the columns you wish to total and then click once on the AutoSum tool. Excel creates a formula at the bottom of each column in the first vacant cell.

Clicking on the AutoSum tool always generates a formula using the SUM function which returns the total of a given range of cells. However the AutoSum tool can also be used with other functions: for example, AVERAGE. To access these other functions, click on the drop-down menu to the right of the AutoSum tool, choose the appropriate function and then check to see whether Excel has correctly guessed the range of cells you want to apply the function to.

If Excel has failed to guess, you can correct it: either by typing the correct reference; or simply resize the selection rectangle until it encloses the correct range of cells then press the Enter key or click on the Enter button located on the left of the formula bar. The formula can then be copied using the AutoFill handle.

The AVERAGE function is famous for generating too many decimal places. If you want the number of decimals to be consistent, click on the Launch button in the Number section of the Home Tab, choose “Number” as the format and then choose the number of decimal places you like.

The remaining functions available on the AutoSum tool are COUNT, which tells you the number of cells in the highlighted range containing numbers; MAX, which returns the highest value in the range; and MIN which brings up the lowest value. The final option in the AutoSum tool drop-down menu reads “Other Functions”. It gives you full access to Excel’s dazzling range of functions.

Economy And Education Are Related

It is no news to anybody the world over that the American financial system encountered a major slump recently. This recession has left many Americans unemployed, or struggling to make ends meet in their daily life. However, for a lot of nations, this provides a superb opportunity. A weak American dollar means that the currency in most other countries is worth more – which means that people looking for an affordable way to attend university can discover no better place to go than the United States.

Nevertheless, this doesn’t mean that you should completely overlook the economic issues that America has faced. As a college student, you may have more money to spend than you would attending a university in your native country, however you’ll likely still need to have a job during your college years to make payments on necessities akin to rent and food. This means that when you find yourself selecting a university to attend in America, take the economic system in the city where the college is located into consideration.

Bigger cities specifically have been affected by this recession, however that does not mean they all have. The big cities that have experienced extreme declines in job availability and standard of living are those who have primarily based their economies on a single trade, generally these industries that produce non-necessities akin to technology and automobiles.

For example, Detroit, Michigan has an economic system based almost solely on the auto industry. When the recession hit, the auto industry was one of the first to go down, with large automobile manufacturers nearly going bankrupt. This has caused the standard of living in Detroit to take a sudden plummet – workers for that business have been left with out jobs, and have suffered due to it.

On the flip side, cities that base their economies on more persistently needed items, such as the production of food, have barely been impacted by the recession at all. It is because though many People have less cash to spend on luxuries, they will always need things like food and shelter. Cities in the center of America, particularly those who thrive in the area of agriculture, have one of the best economies right now and are the best bet for anyone, including future university students such as your self, to find a stable job.

We all have busy lives, and inevitably if we desire to advance our future prospects, getting educated in addition to a 40 hour week is what we’re faced with. Microsoft authorised training could be the answer.

It’s a good idea to talk through what you’re looking to do with an advisor – and if you’re uncertain, then take counsel on which area of the industry would be right for you, based on your likes and dislikes and your character.

When you’ve settled on the career track for you, an appropriate course has to be selected that’s goes with your skills and abilities. You should expect to be offered a bespoke package for you.

Natural Instinct | 24 Hour Income is another great article.

The somewhat scary thought of landing your first role in IT can be relieved by some companies, via a Job Placement Assistance facility. The honest truth is that it’s not as hard as some people make out to find your first job – assuming you’re well trained and qualified; the shortage of IT personnel in Britain looks after that.

Ideally you should have CV and Interview advice and support though; also we would encourage any student to get their CV updated as soon as they start a course – don’t procrastinate and leave it till you’ve finished your exams.

You may not have got to the stage where you’ve passed your first exam when you will be offered your first junior support role; yet this isn’t going to happen if your CV isn’t in front of employers.

The best services to help you find a job are usually specialist independent regional recruitment consultancies. Because they make their money when they’ve found you a job, they’re perhaps more focused on results.

A big grievance of many training course providers is how much people are prepared to study to pass exams, but how un-prepared that student is to get the role they’re studied for. Have confidence – the IT industry needs YOU.

So many training providers only look at the plaque to hang on your wall, and completely avoid what it’s all actually about – which is of course employment. Always start with the end goal – don’t make the journey more important than where you want to get to.

It’s a testament to the marketing skills of the big companies, but the majority of trainees kick-off study that often sounds spectacular from the prospectus, but which gets us a career that doesn’t fulfil at all. Just ask several university leavers for a real eye-opener.

It’s essential to keep your focus on where you want to go, and then build your training requirements around that – avoid getting them back-to-front. Keep on track and study for a job you’ll enjoy for years to come.

Before you embark on a training programme, it makes sense to chat over the exact market needs with a skilled professional, to make sure the learning course covers all the necessary elements.

If you’re like many of the students we talk to then you probably enjoy fairly practical work – the ‘hands-on’ personality type. Typically, the world of book-reading and classrooms can be just about bared when essential, but you’d hate it. Consider interactive, multimedia study if learning from books is not your thing.

Research over recent years has time and time again shown that becoming involved with our studies, to utilise all our senses, is proven to produce longer-lasting and deeper memory retention.

Start a study-program in which you’ll receive a library of CD or DVD ROM’s – you’ll begin by watching videos of instructors demonstrating the skills, followed by the chance to fine-tune your skills in fully interactive practice sessions.

Always insist on a study material demo’ from the school that you’re considering. The package should contain slide-shows, instructor-led videos and interactive labs where you get to practice.

It’s usually bad advice to choose training that is only available online. Because of the variable quality and reliability of all internet service providers, it makes sense to have CD or DVD ROM based materials.

A so-called advisor who doesn’t question you thoroughly – it’s more than likely they’re really a salesperson. If someone pushes specific products before understanding your background and whether you have any commercial experience, then you know you’re being sold to.

It’s worth remembering, if in the past you’ve acquired any previous certification, then it’s not unreasonable to expect to start at a different point than a student who’s starting from scratch.

Where this will be your first stab at studying to take an IT exam then you might also want to cut your teeth on some basic user skills first.

§ January 28th, 2011 § Filed under Marketing § Tagged , , , , , , , , , , , Comments Off

Thoughts on Online Home PC Courses For IT Network Security

§ January 9th, 2011 § Filed under Software § Tagged , , , , , , , , , , , , , Comments Off

Two separate areas of study make up a full CompTIA A+; you’re qualified as an A+ achiever once you’ve passed your exams for both of them.

CompTIA A+ training programs teach diagnostic techniques and fault-finding – via hands on and remote access, in addition to building, fixing, repairing and understanding antistatic conditions.

If you’re considering being a man or woman who is a member of a large organisation – fixing and supporting networks, add Network+ to your CompTIA A+, or alternatively look at doing an MCSA or MCSE with Microsoft to give you a more advanced experience of the way networks work.

Ensure all your qualifications are what employers want – forget programs which lead to some in-house certificate (which is as useless as if you’d printed it yourself).

You’ll find that only recognised qualifications from the top companies like Microsoft, Adobe, CompTIA and Cisco will be useful to a future employer.

It’s usual for students to get confused with one area of their training very rarely considered: How the training is broken down and couriered to your address.

Often, you will join a program requiring 1-3 years study and receive one element at a time until graduation. While this may sound logical on one level, consider this:

Maybe the order of study pushed by the company’s salespeople doesn’t suit all of us. It may be difficult to get through each and every section within their timetable?

The ideal circumstances are to get every piece of your study pack packed off to your address right at the beginning; the entire thing! Then, nothing can hinder your capability of finishing.

Have a conversation with a proficient advisor and they can normally tell you many terrible tales of salespeople ripping-off unsuspecting students. Only deal with an experienced professional that asks lots of questions to uncover the best thing for you – not for their wallet! Dig until you find the right starting point of study for you.

With some real-world experience or certification, you could discover that your appropriate starting-point is different from a beginner.

Working through a basic PC skills module first will sometimes be the most effective way to start into your computer program, but really depends on your level of familiarity with computers.

One thing you must always insist on is full 24×7 support via expert mentors and instructors. Too many companies only seem to want to help while they’re in the office (9am till 6pm, Monday till Friday usually) and nothing at the weekends.

Find a good quality service where you can access help at any time of day or night (irrespective of whether it’s the wee hours on Sunday morning!) Make sure it’s always direct-access to qualified mentors and tutors, and not simply some messaging service that means you’re parked in a queue of others waiting to be called back – probably during office hours.

As long as you look hard, you will find the very best companies which offer online support at all times – at any time of day or night.

Unless you insist on direct-access 24×7 support, you’ll regret it. It may be that you don’t use it during the night, but you may need weekends, early mornings or even late evenings at some point.
