Procedure
For Mentoplasty Chin Reduction, there are two places a surgeon will make an incision. One is under the chin in an inconspicuous location and the other is inside the mouth under the lower lip. An electrical instrument like a drill or bone burr is used to reshape and reduce the bone to make it look more natural. Then stitches are added and tape will be used over it.
For Genioplasty Chin Augmentation, the patient and the doctor will decide to use the patient’s bone or a chin implant or a Silastic chin. Using a chin implant, an incision will be made inside the mouth under the lower lip or under the chin in an inconspicuous location. Sizers will be used to make the most natural appearance and the implant will be placed in the correct sized pocket.
If the patient chooses to use advance bone, then a power saw is used with an incision under the lower lip inside the mouth. There is a special blade to separate the edge. The surgeon moves forward the separated chin bone and uses wires to position it or bone plates made just for this and screws. Stitches are used and tape is applied to the chin.
Alternatives
As with most procedures, there are options for chin surgery. If there is a double chin, liposuction may be used to reduce fat from the chin and neckline. Chin surgery maybe suggested as an alternative to nose surgery as the chin makes the nose look larger. Chin surgery may be combined with other cosmetic procedures as well.
Corrective elevation can be used if a patient has a saggy chin or witches chin. Orthognathic chin surgery may be utilized if a birth defect prevents a person from easily eating.
Recovery, Side Effects, and Complications
After the surgery is over you may have discoloration or swelling of the area operated on. It will take several weeks for it to go down. In about seven days the stitches will be removed. To reduce complications, the patient needs to follow the postoperative instructions. If there is any pain, oral medications can be prescribed. Another way to help with the pain is elevating the head.
You may also experience significant swelling or discoloration in the treated area, which will subside over the course of several weeks. The stitches are typically removed within seven days of the procedure.
It is rare to have complications from this procedure. If an infection does occur in the lip or chin area, an antibiotic will be prescribed and surgical drainage may have to be done. There could also be some scar tissue. Some of the bone could erode with time, but there will be no discomfort, medical concerns, or changes in the appearance of the chin.
With Genioplasty procedures, the plates or wires may lead to discomfort and be removed. Patients may experience temporary feeling loss or extra sensitivity in the chin or lip, and in very rare cases total permanent loss of feeling.
The Cost of Chin Surgery
There are three costs for chin surgery. One is the facility or hospital fee, the anesthesia fee, and the surgeon’s fee. The more complicated the surgery, the more it will cost. For example, if an overnight stay occurred then there would be more costs involved. If a general anesthesia was used and not a local, the cost also would go up.
If multiple procedures were performed, then some fees may be combined. Insurance generally pays for chin surgery if it’s a medically necessary. The typical cost for chin surgery ranges between $3,000 and $10,000.
