Have you ever tried to build a small chicken coop? If you have, you will know that there is more to it than meets the eye.
Only a carpentry wizz or a diy specialist would be able to walk into a store, buy a few materials and then successfully set out and build a small chicken coop without any glitches. I decided that I would start by identifying MY requirements for building a small chicken coop:
1) Simple, day by day instructions
2) Easily adaptable plans for different spaces and sizes
3) Basic tool requirements
4) Cheap and easily available materials
5) The end result should be a practical coop in all aspects
6) Easily accessable support if I get stuck
Sticking to my guns, I set out to find a plan or a design which could meet these requirements. It was not a simple task. I found many designs and plan, but very few of them met ALL of my demands.
After some proper digging I did find a program, with more than 50 designs and easy to follow plans. It also included some brilliant additional information which, I did not know then, but realise now how essential that was to the success of the project. The main item that fish require is clean, oxygenated water. So, how do you do that? Well, the first thing to understand is that pond fish do not require as much oxygenated water in the winter as in the summer, because fish are semi-dormant in the winter. However, warm water is not capable of holding as much oxygen as cold water, so you really need a good aeration system in the summer.
Therefore, you need to set up some sort of effective fish pond water aeration system. This aeration system will be linked closely with your pond filtration device. The front line apparatus for oxygenating your backyard fish pond water is the pond pump. In fact, you may even need two pond pumps.
