However, if your business is to buy and sell homes then changing the old traditional windows is not an option.

A Bit Of Background Regarding The Invention Of DVDs

§ March 18th, 2011 § Filed under Home Based Business § Tagged , , , , , , , , , , , , , , Comments Off

Do you ever wonder who invented the DVD player and how it came about to flood the market and our lives? Well before we go to this topic, let us take a minute to think of what DVD is all about. It is quite interesting to know that DVDs came about because we needed a storage devise to copy and transport data.

We now recollect those days when we used floppy disks and tapes for recording and storing data. It was quite painful to use these as they proved to be often corrupted or damaged easily. Besides they could store very few files of small sizes. So it was a welcome change to see the new storage medium in Compact Discs which could store bigger files and higher capacity. Besides they were stable and incorruptible too.

It makes us laugh now to think of how we all used hundreds of floppy disks and cassettes at home as well as in offices to store small amount of data and keep reusing them though not reliable. As our need for storage of data began to increase, there was no other option but to look at alternate storage mechanisms with higher capacity and stability too.

There was actually no other option for the techies but to find an immediate solution to the data storage problem and come up with some stable and doable new format addressing all the weaknesses as well as the requirements. The problem was being addressed differently by different groups until such time that everybody began to collaborate and the new DVD format was born as a solution to the data storage problem and a feasible and stable alternative.

In line with the huge demand, production facilities were setup and very soon enough stocks began to be produced flooding every retail space with CD Disks which people bought like hot cakes.

Japanese consumers were the first ones to receive the commercial stocks of CDs in the market. It reached American shores only after about a year and thereafter to the European consumers too. Today they are available all over the world.

The Japanese company which was responsible for the invention of this DVD player was accredited and rightly provided the trigger for a far reaching growth of mobile entertainment technology.

The happiest consumers who loved this development were the parents who took driving vacations with family for they no longer had to stack loads of floppy disks. It was now very easy for them to carry their favorite movies and cartoons for the kids in the DVDs.

Is the Candy Bar Baby Ruth is Named for Babe Ruth? You Decide

§ December 21st, 2010 § Filed under Home Based Business § Tagged , , , , , , , , , Comments Off

The candy bar that would become Baby Ruth got it’s start in 1916 when Otto Y. Schnering founded a bakery in Chicago. Inside the bakery he set aside a small area for a candy department. His candy proved so popular that in no time the bakery was discontinued.

Schnering changed the name of the company to the Curtiss Candy Company.

Early Success

If you want to find out how to select a generator, read this article: Tips For Choosing Outdoor Furniture

One of Curtiss’ early successes was a product called the Kandy Kate. It was a candy bar with a pastry center topped with nuts and coated with chocolate. Sound familiar?

In 1920, Curtiss fiddled with the formula — the mixed nuts became peanuts, the pasty became nougat and chocolate…well, it stayed chocolate. He then changed the name to Baby Ruth.

Within just two years of its creation, the Baby Ruth was sold nationwide — a remarkable feat for the day.

Was It Named For Babe Ruth?

Well…no. According to Schnering.

Lawyers for Curtiss maintained, in a lawsuit with Babe Ruth, that the Baby Ruth candy bar was named after President Grover Cleveland’s daughter, Ruth. This seems unlikely since Ruth Cleveland was born on October 3, 1891 and died of diphtheria 13 years later. Cleveland himself died in 1908. When the Baby Ruth bar was introduced 16 years after Ruth Cleveland’s death, few people would have even remembered her — especially kids.

But everyone knew Babe Ruth. He was the most popular sports figure of the day. A towering god of a man known, loved and admired worldwide.

You decide.

Very Popular — By Any Name

Baby Ruth was extremely successful, due to or in spite of the name. This was mainly due to Schnering’s uncanny promotional abilities.

One time he chartered an airplane and dropped the bars by with miniature parachutes over the city of Pittsburgh. This boosted sales so much he did drops in cities in more than 40 states.

The company also began to promote with four-color advertisements in national magazines (one of the first candies to do so.)

Together these promotions were so successful Schnering had to build another factory, then another, to keep up with demand. By 1927, the Curtiss facilities were the largest candy factories in the world.

The Curtiss Candy Company sold out to Standard Brands in 1930, which promptly decreased advertising. The same year Mars, Inc., began manufacturing Snickers and sales of Baby Ruths fell and never recovered to their high mark even though it remains among America’s most consumed and favorite candies.

Key Points In The Historic Development Of The Sash Windows

§ October 2nd, 2010 § Filed under Home Based Business § Tagged , , , , , , , , , , , , Comments Off

The historic development of the sash window is a fascinating aspect of construction. Its design features a couple of panels with one at the upper part and the other at the lower part. In many cases, the sash window is designed with the upper part being movable. Majority of people take the window only as a feature for allowing some light in the room and to some extent for airing the house, but windows encompasses some other essential characteristics that include giving a description of the architectural style, taste, social hierarchy, building economics and most importantly changing times.

For us to be able to appreciate the maintenance of the early sash windows, it is quite important to familiarize ourselves with their historical background. Do not forget that there are many purported home improvement professionals all over, who aim to substitute the historic sash windows with modern ones. This then leads to a reduction on the value of the home.

The first thing you will realize about the history of sash windows is that they were not the first types of windows. The early forms of windows were small apertures in walls referred to as wind holes or wind eyes. These were protected with bars, curtains and oiled or paper cloth. These provided limited light but also helped kick-start the future of the window as an architectural element in form of sash windows among others in the 17th century.

The first types of sash windows had a permanent top sash and a bottom panel sliding upwards all the way through a groove. The movable part was held up by pegs or metal catches. With time this model of sash window was redesigned to a duo hung sliding sash, which is common nowadays.

These featured both the upper and lower sashes hanging on cords using counterbalance mechanism referred to as the double hung. There was also a single-hung type using a similar mechanism but only for the lower sash.

This is the form of sash window system that has stayed put with just simple change in its positioning on the wall. The early sash boxes were externally visible unlike the current ones installed 4 inches from the wall face. The change in trend followed the great fire of London. It cited the boxes as a fire risk since fire could easily jump from one sash box to the other.

Later other changes were introduced especially in the installation of the sash window. For instance, the box frames were put behind the masonry leaving a wider area for the window. Apart from the overall design, it is important to consider the evolution of the glass pane. Most people might think it was influenced by changing fashion trends but it was the limitations of glass production that had the most effect. Later on, glass production improved thus the popularity of the sash windows. Therefore, the extended historic development of the sash windows has ensured a permanent place in architectural designs.

Sash windows were popular in historic homes during times when central heating and cooling were not available. Many of the single glazed historic styles now have been replaced by double glazed wooden windows .

The History Of Glass And The Impact Glass Windows Have On Our Lives Today

§ May 26th, 2010 § Filed under Site Promotion § Tagged , , , , , , , , , , , Comments Off

The history of Glass windows began around 100 AD when the Romans began using glass for windows in buildings and villas with prestigious status. Various glass pieces made by the Romans have been found in areas across the Mediterranean, Europe and China. German Craftsmen expanded on the use of glass in the eleventh century by producing small flat pieces and putting them together with lead, hence the beginning of stained glass.

With time came machines to produce glass in more uniform ways than the previous by hand method. The machines made are possible to produce bottles, decorative items and vases. In 1914 a resident of Belgium named Fourcault discovered that he could use a tank furnace to make continuous sheets of glass.

A tank furnace was the new item towards the industrial revolution end that replaced the pot furnace. The newer tank furnace made it possible to develop large amounts of molten glass. After Fourcault another gentleman, an American named Colburn expanded on Fourcaults ideas with newer and improved ways to produce sheet glass.

His design was later adapted into the Libby Owens company as well as the Pittsburgh process that utilized both Fourcault and Colburns systems in 1928 to design a better system, which continues to be in use today. The end of the Victorian era when glass was being machine made was less expensive and more accessible.

The Great Exhibition in 1851 had on the Crystal Palace on display which was a glass structure. The structure made entirely from glass encouraged home owners replace the thin sheets of wood currently covering the open areas, with glass windows as protection against the elements and to add decorative elements to the home.

The history of glass windows has many progressions over the years going from small thick pieces used only in homes of the prestigious to the thin and often cloudy pieces of many Victorian era homes. Modern Plexiglas has replaced the easily broken glass in the windows of many homes and stained glass as gone numerous styles. There are, however, many homeowners who still opt for the thin wood enclosed panels that were the first glimpse into glass windows.

Filling Out a Family Tree Template

§ May 4th, 2010 § Filed under Software § Tagged , , , , , , , , , , , Comments Off

The proper way to input information on a family tree.

Putting names into your family tree template:

First you would record the first name, then their other names, and finally the surname. Surnames must be capitalized, and this means it would be displayed as such: John Lyon Smith. Married women will always have their maiden name listed, but if you do not know their maiden name, you should write “unknown”. In order to indicate unknown, you would write the following: Mary Wright//. The // indicates that the maiden name is unknown.

Nicknames are an area that you need to be careful with. If you find that they have a nickname, then their name would be put first, and the nickname would be put in quotes between the first name and the surname. If they have undergone a name change, then they would have their original name in brackets next to the new name. It is important to follow this format so that everyone will be able to read it in the future.

Spelling errors are common in matters of family history. If you come across a surname that doesn’t seem to be correct, then you should leave it along, but record different versions or variations that you come across in the future.

You might also find that some surnames were changed due to immigration to a different country. This may have been a political reason, or it may be that they wanted to fit in. If you happen to know the original spelling of the name then you would record that first, then make a note of the version it was changed to later on.

How to enter dates into family trees:

Dates will normally be formatted using the European standard. This is different from the American standard because in this one the day would be listed, then the month, and then the year. The first letter of the month will be capitalized, leaving you with the following: 18 May 1911

When dealing with approximate dates, show these with a prefix: abt (short for “about”) or ca. or c. (abbreviation of the Latin word “circa” meaning “around” or “about”): e.g.: abt Feb 1916 or ca. Feb 1916 or c. Feb 1916.

In the event that you do not know the precise date, but have an approximation of when it happened, then you can use “bet” which is short for ‘between’. To do this properly you would show the dates as: E.g. bet. 27 Feb 1921 – 29 Jun 2008.

You might run into a case where the date is only represented in numerals. If you find this to be the case, then you should know that in North America, the month is shown first, and the number corresponds to the month’s position in the calendar. If you are looking at a European chart, then the day would be shown first.

Location data and abbreviations

When you are recording a location, make sure that you do so with accuracy. You would want to start from the smaller area, then the larger one. In other words, if you are trying to represent the United Kingdom, you would show exactly where the person came from in the United Kingdom. For instance: London, England, United Kingdom. Other information to include would be when they were born and when they died.
