Computers For Children

§ December 1st, 2011 § Filed under Software § Tagged , , , , , , , , , , , Comments Off

Anybody who has not been in a young children’s classroom for thirty years or almost certainly even ten years may have a hard time guessing which age group the equipment is meant for. Kids these days are much more aware of what adults would call the ‘adult world’, because kids grow up so fast now that they are invading the adult world.

There are still lots of adults who are wary of computers, but not a lot children are that frightened by them. Children love the Internet and are not worried of using computers to access it. Older individuals have a reverence for computers that children have never picked up.

They are not in awe of them – there is no mystique surrounding computers for them. Computers are just normal items to them. Kids may not understand how they work, but hey! that’s true of most items as far as children are concerned.

This is perhaps something that parents should take into account while preparing their children for school or even kindergarten – not that children require a lot of encouragement to play on the Net. Most parents have more trouble keeping them off it!

Anyway, the fact is that many modern kindergartens have computers for the kids to get on line. This does not mean that the children are being forced to go on line, it is merely that there is a lot of educational material on line that teachers can use in these times of cut-backs on resources and kids and their parents expect to see a computer in the classroom too.

It is worth talking to the school teacher and finding out what degree of computer knowledge is expected of kids going to that school. It will not be high, but it is worth being sure that they are up to that level, even if it is just so that they do not feel out of place in class.

The access that these school computers have to the Internet will be quite restricted, so there is no need to worry that the kids will be accessing inappropriate material and you should set up an ‘account’ or ‘user profile’ on your home computer that is similar to the one in school.

This is done by the use of programs known as ‘net nannies’. You can also use the net nanny built into Windows and you can block individual web sites too. Enquire of what system is in use at school and how it is configured. Copy that onto your home computer but only configure your children’s account(s) with it.

This means that everyone in the household will have to log in at home: The kids will log in to an account with restricted access and the adults will log into an account or accounts with unlimited access. This is not hard to set up.

This is not a foolproof method of preventing older children from accessing inappropriate web sites, but it is all you will need for keeping young children safe, although parents should always show an interest in what their children are doing on line and they should alter their passwords frequently.

Is the Candy Bar Baby Ruth is Named for Babe Ruth? You Decide

§ December 21st, 2010 § Filed under Home Based Business § Tagged , , , , , , , , , Comments Off

The candy bar that would become Baby Ruth got it’s start in 1916 when Otto Y. Schnering founded a bakery in Chicago. Inside the bakery he set aside a small area for a candy department. His candy proved so popular that in no time the bakery was discontinued.

Schnering changed the name of the company to the Curtiss Candy Company.

Early Success

If you want to find out how to select a generator, read this article: Tips For Choosing Outdoor Furniture

One of Curtiss’ early successes was a product called the Kandy Kate. It was a candy bar with a pastry center topped with nuts and coated with chocolate. Sound familiar?

In 1920, Curtiss fiddled with the formula — the mixed nuts became peanuts, the pasty became nougat and chocolate…well, it stayed chocolate. He then changed the name to Baby Ruth.

Within just two years of its creation, the Baby Ruth was sold nationwide — a remarkable feat for the day.

Was It Named For Babe Ruth?

Well…no. According to Schnering.

Lawyers for Curtiss maintained, in a lawsuit with Babe Ruth, that the Baby Ruth candy bar was named after President Grover Cleveland’s daughter, Ruth. This seems unlikely since Ruth Cleveland was born on October 3, 1891 and died of diphtheria 13 years later. Cleveland himself died in 1908. When the Baby Ruth bar was introduced 16 years after Ruth Cleveland’s death, few people would have even remembered her — especially kids.

But everyone knew Babe Ruth. He was the most popular sports figure of the day. A towering god of a man known, loved and admired worldwide.

You decide.

Very Popular — By Any Name

Baby Ruth was extremely successful, due to or in spite of the name. This was mainly due to Schnering’s uncanny promotional abilities.

One time he chartered an airplane and dropped the bars by with miniature parachutes over the city of Pittsburgh. This boosted sales so much he did drops in cities in more than 40 states.

The company also began to promote with four-color advertisements in national magazines (one of the first candies to do so.)

Together these promotions were so successful Schnering had to build another factory, then another, to keep up with demand. By 1927, the Curtiss facilities were the largest candy factories in the world.

The Curtiss Candy Company sold out to Standard Brands in 1930, which promptly decreased advertising. The same year Mars, Inc., began manufacturing Snickers and sales of Baby Ruths fell and never recovered to their high mark even though it remains among America’s most consumed and favorite candies.

Book Review: Illustrated Nature Story

§ December 10th, 2010 § Filed under Fishing § Tagged , , , , Comments Off

Inspired by his own fishing experience, Harold Brouillette, a retired District Judge, brings us The Lonely Tadpole, a nature story about the loneliness and fright of a small tadpole whose life suddenly changed. It is told in the voice of the tadpole. The story begins when he is caught in a dip net for fishing bait in the farm pond where he had been happy with his many brother and sister tadpoles. Next came a bumpy and scary trip in a bait bucket to the “big lake” where Jake and his daddy had gone to fish. When the fishing began, he managed to escape hands trying to catch him to put him on a hook. After hours of dodging hands in the bait bucket, the fishing trip ended and there were a few tadpoles and minnows left in the bait bucket. Would they be brought back to the pond? No! They were suddenly dumped into the lake as leftover bait.

What a shock and what a surprise! That was the beginning of a scary adventure of life in a big, deep lake with big fish, snakes, alligators and many other large creatures. He couldn’t find any of his brothers or sisters, and he was very scared and lonely.

After the first shock of his new environment, he decided to be brave and to confront his daily struggles. After a while, he began to realize that he was changing and growing. First, he grew front legs — then back legs — then he lost his tail — and finally he became a frog. What an adventure! And then he learned that he could crawl onto the shore of the lake and that he could live both on land and in the lake. He found out from the other frogs that he was an amphibian.

Interesting Facts About Wrought Iron is another great article.

Even while always afraid of being eaten by larger creatures in the lake, he was able to make many new friends. He was not quite so lonely anymore, but he wondered about his brothers and sisters. He often thought about how happy he had been in Jake’s pond and he wondered if Jake still visited the pond or whether he had grown up and moved away to the city.

This fun little story entertains while teaching children a little about nature — specifically, about amphibians and the life cycle of the frog. Also, it teaches about the problems and fears which life presents to all creatures, great and small, and about the courage to face these problems. The reflection about the tadpole’s prior happy life in the pond and about Jake growing up mixes a little nostalgia into an interesting and entertaining tale which will be treasured by parents and children alike. The color illustrations are beautifully done and add a great dimension to the story. The can be ordered at Amazon.com, BN.com, and almost everywhere books are sold.

Online Holiday and Christmas Gift Giving

§ December 9th, 2010 § Filed under Ecommerce § Tagged , , , , , , , , , , , Comments Off

Can you remember the excitement of Christmas Eve as a child? Although, I have to admit, it has been a good many years since I experienced that joy, I haven’t forgotten what it was like waiting breathlessly to see Santa in all his glory with loads of presents and goodies. Now I watch the grandkid’s eyes shine.

Each year millions of children eagerly await the arrival of St. Nick. Perhaps the most difficult night for youngsters to fall asleep is the night when Santa is due to arrive.

Santa is not the only holiday figure that is so anxiously awaited each year. All around the world, gift givers make scheduled stops at the houses of all good little boys and girls. Some even stop where boys and girls have not been so good.

The roots of the Christmas present extend to ancient times. The gift giving tradition we are familiar with today is perhaps the most like Victorian England. The Victorians made family a part of the holiday celebration which brought warmth and spirit to Christmas

The Victorians had parties that were a lot of messy fun. Each member of the family was assigned a color. In a room crisscrossed with yarn of various colors, each person followed an assigned color through the web of yarn until he or she reached the present tied to the end.

Because friendliness and charity fill many hearts during the Christmas season, giving gifts is natural. An expression of love and kindness is the ultimate reason for giving a gift. Whether the gift is for a loved one or a friend from work, you want that person to know they are appreciated.

Although gift giving continues throughout the entire year, it seems Christmas is the one holiday when people spend hours searching for the right gift, wrapping and stashing it away until the final moment.

I hope you have wonderful holidays! For gift ideas, please visit Skysuccess Gift Ideas. You might just save yourself some extra time this year to spend with your family. Ebay’s recently published a report revealing that 79% of small bricks and mortar retailers are of the belief that having an online presence has saved their business. This report, called the Online Business Index, suggests that these retailers can match or even out perform other online businesses when they have an online presence. Their online store matches sales, profit margins and prices of these other online businesses.

Taking the step of branching out online allows physical stores to be able to compete on the same level as online retailers. As the online economy continues to grow, it has become an increasingly important tool to accompany the traditional bricks and mortar business.

Enterprising high street retailers continue to develop their online business and are rapidly joining the ranks of online businesses. In this way they can improve their offline income. Vehicle Emergency Kits–Everything You Need!

The sight of an auto slammed into a tree made me hit the brakes and interrupt a nighttime drive to the next town, where a friend was waiting to see me. The first thing I reached for were vehicle emergency kits.

Having retrieved an emergency safety light and a travel safety alarm from the glove compartment, I moved to the back where a 4 in 1 emergency auto tool and a 9 LED flashlight were. I set some lights to flash for help next.

I could make a female out inside the car as I walked towards it. Up close, I saw she was awake and struggling to free herself from the seat behind the wheel. I took note of her head contusion.

Solar PV Panels – Photovoltaic Panels is another great article.

Remembering that my multi-purpose auto tool can be utilized to break car windows, I grabbed it from my vehicle emergency kits and proceeded to smash a back window so I could open the front door from there.

I did not take long to find out that I needed help if I was to shove her free with another set of hands tugging at her. The driver’s wheel won’t give otherwise. Unfortunately, there were no other vehicles in sight.

I foraged for more aids in my vehicle emergency kits, all the while thinking of what else to do until I spotted my travel safety alarm. Counting on the ringing to be heard for as far as 9 feet, I turned it on.

A couple of policemen came to the rescue soon afterwards, confirming that they indeed paid attention to the emergency lights blinking and the emergency alarm ringing. They wasted no time in driving to the source then.

The officers escorted the woman to their patrol vehicle and assured me she would receive immediate medical attention. I drove on, proud of my heroic act and grateful for the vehicle emergency kits that made it possible..

For Reliable Power, My Preference Of Stun Gun Is Always A Stun Master Stun Gun

§ September 9th, 2010 § Filed under Home Based Business § Tagged , , , , , , , , , , , , , , Comments Off

I struck a friendship with an office mate who just happened to be a man. It was when my marriage turned sour. My husband reacted with insecurity, ambushing my cell calls, thumbing through texts and showing up at my workplace unexpectedly.

The final straw was when he forbade me to participate in a workshop just because it was in a different city. I lost sleep that night, bent on procuring a stun gun. He even demanded to join me after I argued about it rationally.

I made as if a gal pal of mine needed moral support and called on her. This bothered my husband the least as it took me away from my job. The truth was her Stun Master Stun Gun was what I came to see.

I have long known that Stun Master is a reliable brand. My own father carries one of its products but I never did pay attention to self defense weapons until a stun gun seemed to be my only protection against a suspicious husband.

Designed to emit a high voltage through low amperage, the Stun Master Stun Gun administers great stopping power without being fatal. I read it on several web sites from my buddy’s bedroom.

I saw that the Stun Master Stun Gun was a choice of 100,000, 200,000 and 300,000 volts in different sizes. I was keen on procuring the smallest, a 4.5 inch long model, because it would fit my smaller hands.

I prevailed upon my friend to have the stun gun delivered to her home the next day, and then I picked it up on the way home. Not many weeks after, my husband came home drunk and hit me.

My spine endured his kicking, and my face, his blows. He even jerked my head repeatedly. I grabbed my stun gun hidden beneath the mattress and fired twice. I had him arrested, vowing never to let him lay a finger on me again.

It was reported that two carjackers were caught trying to break into a parked car at a Houston mall. The pair was identified as Chavo Rodriguez and Ramon Fuentes. The shopping center’s guard apprehended them when he heard a loud alarm.

Chris Jefferson, the car’s proprietor, said that he had installed various vehicle safety products that included motion detectors and a vibration alarm. The burglars didn’t anticipate a second alarm ringing after they had deactivated the customary car alarm.

Car thieves have gotten smarter. They are familiar with standard issue car alarms, so those are unreliable. I thought of using more vehicle safety products to increase the lines of defense against them, Mr. Jefferson explains.
